Riding Tips and riders stories.
Try the Weave
How many times have you approached an intersection with an oncoming car waiting to turn left, not really knowing if the driver sees you? I use a maneuver that I believe gets you noticed. I call it the weave.
As you approach the intersection, initiate a slight left-right movement with the bars, or by shifting your weight . Don’t overdo it—all it takes is a slight lateral movement so your headlight visibly moves side to side.
I’ve been doing this maneuver for about two years now, and it seems to really get a driver’s attention! I’ve had drivers start to pull in front of me, but as soon as I weave, they stop and look at me. Some look at me as if I’m nuts, but the important thing is they look.
I think two factors come into play here: A steady headlight gets lost in the background, and a side-to-side movement, like shaking your head, means no. I don’t advocate flashing your high beam because some drivers perceive this as a “go ahead’’ signal.
I’ve shared this maneuver with all my riding buddies, and they have given me positive feedback that it works. Of course, it’s not 100 percent foolproof. Always assume the worst, cover your brake lever and be prepared to take evasive action.
The Most Basic Lesson of All
When I took the Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCourse, the instructor really hammered into us that the most important factor in safety was being constantly aware of your riding environment.
Just half a year later, I was traveling down a four-lane boulevard in New Jersey at about 45 mph. I was in the left lane, because I was going to turn left ahead.
Directly in front of me was a truck that looked like it was straight out of “Sanford & Son.” There was more junk piled on the back of it than I would have thought possible. The training came to mind immediately, and I thought, “Maybe I should back off a bit.”
Not 10 seconds later, a giant Weber gas grill came tumbling off the truck, directly into my path. There was oncoming traffic to my left, and more traffic to my right. Because I had time to react, I was able to stop safely and avoid catastrophe. Had I not backed off, I couldn’t have avoided some kind of crash, most likely a serious one.
Riding Tired
I’ve been riding about five years now, and I enjoy reading “Crash Course” each month because it gives me great ideas to think about.
My crash happened on a cool day in December. I had worked a graveyard shift, then stayed up the whole day because I was starting my weekend.
By evening, I had been awake for about 33 hours or so. I thought, “Hey, a nice brisk ride sounds like fun, something to wake me up.”
I suited up and went out, not thinking about my fatigue or frame of mind. I was flying through twisties on a country road when I suddenly discovered I couldn’t make the upcoming corner. My mind had shifted to autopilot, and I was going way too fast.
I only remember going off the road. The next thing you know, I’m lying on my back, and my bike is lying behind me. I broke the fairing, cracked the headlight, windscreen, left mirror and brake lever. Luckily, I was uninjured except for being sore for about two weeks.
I learned a valuable lesson from that crash. I need to be aware of how I am feeling and what frame of mind I am in. If your not aware and alert, You have no business riding.
Ride Your Own Ride
I have always considered myself a safe rider. But one time, I forgot one of the most basic rules.
I was riding with a friend. The rain had just stopped, and the road was still wet.
I was leading on my 750cc BMW on a curvy road that was new to both of us. I was taking it easy, so my friend passed me on his 750 Yamaha.
Knowing I was a more experienced rider, I matched his pace, reasoning that if he could make it, then so could I.
Of course, I didn’t consider that he might not make it.
As he rounded a turn, he slid and crashed. I couldn’t make the turn either and ran over his rear wheel.
The bikes were damaged, but fortunately we weren’t hurt. When the highway patrol arrived, the officer said there were a lot of accidents on that curve because it was off-camber and slippery when wet.
I relearned the basic lesson: Ride your own ride.
